Carl Schmitt (1889-1989), was born in Warren, Ohio. He studied under Emil Carlsen at the National Academy of Design in New York and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. After serving in the army in World War I, he settled in the artists’ colony of Silvermine in Connecticut. His work was exhibited widely in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago and elsewhere (including ten invitations to the Carnegie International). The Carl Schmitt Foundation was established to perpetuate the appreciation of Schmitt’s work and to make his achievement better known as an outstanding man, artist and thinker.
